Devil's Backbone Wilderness - Mark Twain National Forest

Location: South from Rolla on Hwy 63 to West Plains then 15-miles west on Hwy CC.

Distance: There are 13-miles of maintained trails to explore and many options that can extend your hike or exploration of this wilderness area.

Water: There are three springs (Blue Spring, Amber Spring, and McGarr Spring) that provide water to the river year-round and the North Fork River crosses the wilderness as well. Be sure and treat, filter, or boil all water.

Parking: Overnight parking is available at three designated trailheads (Raccoon Hollow, McGarr Ridge, and Collins Ridge) plus there is access at the Blue Springs parking area in the North Fork Recreation Area just outside of the wilderness area.

Comments: The area comprises 6,595 acres and is ideal for hiking or overnight backpacking. Elevations range from 1,020 feet to 680 feet along the North Fork of the White River. The forest is dominated by a variety of oaks, hickory and shortleaf pine. Scattered limestone glades and other openings provide some of the more favorable places to view the large variety of wildlife found in this area. Registration boxes are located at each trailhead. The Devil's Backbone Ridge is a major feature on the map that the trail traverses.

Maps: An access map can be obtained from the Rolla Supervisor's Office, Mark Twain National Forest by calling 573-364-4621 or from the Willow Springs Ranger District 417-469-3155. Quad Sheets: Dora, Siloam Springs, Cureall NW, and Pottersville 7-1/2 minute Quadrangles 1:24000.

Cautions: Eastern timber rattlers and copperheads can be found in the area.
