The Lassie Foundation "El Rey" Anisette
Records
by Chad Johnston
The lasses, or rather, the lads
in the Lassie Foundation continue to revolutionize and redefine noisy swoon
music with their latest offering, the "El Rey" EP. Nearly achieving
"Perfect Pop," the Foundation has compiled a seven song collection – a
string of pearls that drives the listener to the nearest retailer with
curious questions like "This Lassie
Foundation band -- Do they have
any other records out?" And "Where can I get another fix?"
After hearing the band's Beach Boys meets Slowdive meets My Bloody Valentine
brand of California noise, a person is willing to sell their
worldly possessions and their souls
to get a fix. Hopelessly listenable, "El Rey" is comprised of two
new tracks and two songs from each of the Foundation's previous releases,
"California" and "Pacifico." Of the "California" songs,
"I'm Stealing to Be Your One in a
Million" was re-recorded sans the static and with greater cohesiveness
as a band. "El Rey" and "Crown of the Sea" appear from the "Pacifico"
sessions. The new tracks, "Promise Ring" and "Conquer Me," demonstrate
the Foundation's increasing maturity in both songwriting and overall musicianship.
"Conquer Me," for instance, is the sort of glorified, glamorous rock ‘n'
roll that makes the listener want to ditch his or her own personal identity
and become lead singer Wayne Everett.
Although the band has only
existed in name since 1996, this is a "best-of" EP of sorts that is sure
to establish the Lassie Foundation as one of Southern California's
most important bands. The rest of the known world will hopefully
catch on as well.
