The Review of the Month--By Forrest Cokely
"The Heart"
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hand
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter----bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."
Stephen Crane (1871 - 1900)
Seems like an everyday occurance to me . . ..
Inside a cursory examination of this
poem we find two voices, an observer, and an observed.
The observer quantifies the observed
in disgust, ( 'a creature' {sub-human}; 'naked' {unrefined, without regard
for the elements or his surroundings, plain.}; 'bestial' {an animal}.)
then goes on to describe his station in the world - 'squatting on the ground',
and from there, realizing the observed's occupation 'holding his heart
in his hand, and being sustained by that feast' the observer mocks this
occupation by a question filled with sarcasm and disdain"Is it good, my
friend?";
To this query the observed replies
"It is bitter----bitter, but I like it because it is bitter, and because
it is my heart."
The question I ask from this analyses
is this . . . are you the observer, or the observed?
Do you taste the bitterness of your
heart in satisfaction, or gaze in condemnation at those who occupy themselves
in this honest pursuit.
Have you known the quantification
of others, and still responded with "I like it because it is bitter,
and because it is my heart".
Can we break free from are schedules
and have lunch today?
-- I know what I'm having . . ..
Love yourselves, feel free.
I leave you with another verse, and
my best wishes,
-your servant,
--Forrest Cokely
Inside this new love, die.
Your way begins on the other side,
Become the sky.
Take an axe to the prison wall.
Escape.
Walk out like someone suddenly born
into color.
Do it now.
