Charles Bick, Second Son
The family identifies this man as Charles although his name appears in the family Bible as
Karl. Johanna M. Bick's 1905 obituary refers to him as Carl Bick of 2842 Victor Street.

Family tradition says Charles was educated as a baker and cutlery man in Germany. His
wife Elizabeth Mode Bick opened a bakery in St. Louis.

In the 1870 and 1880 census, Charles' works in a bucket factory and his occupation in
1900 is cooper.

In April 2002, a Bick relative visited St. Mathews Cemetery and saw a headstone for
Charles Bick which read: Father Carl Bick, born Oct. 5, 1843-died Feb. 16, 1909. He is
buried beside son Ferdinand Bick who died in 1896. There are headstones beside
Ferdinand but they are illegible. It is possible the records in the cemetery office are
indexed as Beck instead of Bick.

According to information from Charles' daughter Elizabeth Bick and son Charles, the
family was protestant and Lutheran. "Grandfather Charles Bick had an old saying that
ever anyone felt they would like to go to church, they shuld pick the closest church to them,
regardless of where they were."
